What is the purpose of finger and toe nails?

to protect the skin underneath your nail. also it works with your fingers to pickup things and work with things properly .

don't be mean person that answered before me you can be wat ever age to ask any question! What is the purpose of finger and toe nails?
All primates have nails instead of claws. Nails have evolved to protect the sensitive nerve-filled touch pads on the bottoms of our fingers and toes to allow us to handle things with greater dexterity.

very surprised some 1 your age is asking .. im 17What is the purpose of finger and toe nails?
To protect the finger, I'm guessing. Cats and things have claws, so maybe to help us grab on to things or something like the way other mammels use them.
Well, I'm surprised no one has answered scratching! As far as I can tell that's all mine are good for. That and snagging on fine clothing.
to protect soft delicate clothes
to scratch xD
